The Nanny State is Alive and Well

Apparently Nanny is alive and well and living in Westminster!

Have you ever seen such an overbearing "do this, and do that" government?

The Labour government is now into serious banning mode. Children‘s food advertising, smoking, foxhunting and even their own gambling proposals are coming under various bans.

We might all have differing views about any of those mentioned above, but one thing seems certain—we should be persuaded and educated, not legislated against as a first choice rather than a last choice.

There can be little doubt that obesity in children needs curbing, but surely this smacks more of parental control than anything else. Give a child too much of the wrong sort of food and they will eat it and a ban on advertising will seek to treat the symptom rather than the cause.

The ban on smoking will find favour with a lot of non-smokers like myself—especially when you are out trying to enjoy a pleasant meal. But because others have imposed a blanket ban Labour have to follow.

As for the ban on American-style casinos, well this really does amaze me. After all the government has spent the last few weeks trying to persuade us that more gambling is a good thing. Now they want to restrict it—so perhaps it is only partly good for us!

Nice to know that Nanny knows best, and no doubt we can look forward to the next ban with bated breath.
