Horsted: 20th March 2003

Travellers Enclosure at Horsted Farm

A mysterious wooden enclosure has been erected at Horsted Farm

In mid-March 2003 an area of Horsted Farm land adjacent to the footpath that runs from beside the college down to Vale Drive was fenced off by the erection of wooden fecncing, forming an enclosure. No-entry signs declaring this enclosed area to be private property were put up on this enclosure and also on a gate on the other side of the footpath.

So what is it all about?

Well, initial information suggests that it is the College who had all this work done, but it is not yet clear whether this should have happened. The question of land ownership of Horsted Farm and adjacent open spaces has been unclear for some time, and is currently being thoroughly checked at the Land Registry by Council officers.

Ward Councillor John Ward has been investigating, and has passed on ideas on how to ensure that the land ownership issue is fully resolved and the situation with the fencing and signs dealt with appropriately. He has also strongly recommended that all the land ownership information is placed on the Council's Geographic Information System (GIS) once the position is clear.
