All of Medway: 3rd October 2003

Money LibDems' Local Taxation Costs more than three times Council Tax

Liberal Democrat plans for local taxation would more than treble the amount of local tax in Medway.

The full implications of the Liberal Democrats' plans to replace Council Tax by a local income tax structure have been revealed, at their party conference, on 23rd September 2003.

Their local taxation scheme would replace the present system by a local income tax and.a regional income tax. This would take the average local tax bill in Medway from its present level of £758 for a typical two-earner household (source: Office of the Deputy Prime Minister) to no less than £2,548—more than three times the current amount.

Most people would have to pay more under this scheme, many pensioners included.
